Happy New Year to you one and all. It was great having our class back together again. The class wrote a journal entry telling a few things they enjoyed doing during Winter Break. We did a number of things with counting this week. Please find the 0-20 flash cards that were sent home a month ago and help your child review counting from 20-0. Use the same cards to count to 20 by 2s. We are also counting from 0 -100 by tens and 5 - 50 by fives. And of course 0-75 or 100 by ones. Please review one or two categories each day. We continue to practice printing the number formations of 0-10. The class celebrated the New Year by writing a scrap book entry telling one of two things that they would like to do in the year 2011. We read each child work looking for spacing, punctuation, capitalization, the proper use of upper and lower case letters, and writing complete sentences. It was a great opportunity to evaluate their written work verbally. The class had great fun looking at their work through the eyes of their classmates and each child has made progress since earlier in the year! Hip, Hip, Hooray! The class is now beginning to sort coins saying both the name and the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. This

is definitely a work is progress so please wait a few weeks before asking your child to practice this activity at home
. The children also tallied mini colored marsh mellows by fives for the first time.
Soup is the
decodable book your child brought home. Perhaps you could talk about a few soups you enjoyed as a child. We are looking for words using words in the
ig, and
ip word families. The children enjoyed the opportunity to enjoys two New Year's parties this week! What a treat! The class concluded the week by making beautiful mobiles. The activity was quite challenging so I had no time to takes pictures. However, the children were VERY proud seeing their snowballs on the bulletin board so please come by to and take a peek! The children and I are thrilled to be visiting Noddles and Company on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 to learn all we can about creating a business that serves macaroni dishes to its customers!
PLEASE remember, TUESDAY, JANUARY 11th FROM 8 :30 - 9:30 IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH A FIRST GRADE TEACHER In ELLS CONFERENCE ROOM AND LEARN ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT FIRST GRADE! IT"S ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT EACH FIRST GRADE CLASS AND SEE THE CHILDREN IN ACTION! ALSO, on Thursday January 13th, go to the ice rink with your child by 8:10 for our first ice skating lesson. Wishing you a great weekend!
