Preparations for Thanksgiving

Several times this week, the children made outstanding two, three, and four part patterns using red, yellow, and orange foam leaves. Later, the class used this idea to create the hand bands for the turkey hats that they wore to the SK Feast. We children did some mathematical calculations while making applesauce for the Feast. They estimated the number of apples in the seven bags, and after they counted them, determined that there were eighty-two apples altogether. Mackenzie estimated eighty apples, Yeah! Those eight-two apples weighed twenty-0ne pounds and after picking them up in a basket, the children agreed that twenty-one pounds was really heavy! The children took turns coring, cutting, and putting the apples in a large pot. They were surprised that we did not peel the apples or take the seeds out before putting the apples in the pot. They would learn why the skins and seeds would never appear in the applesauce later in the afternoon. We took the pot down to the kitchen and asked Ms. Donna, our school chef, if she would slowly cook the apples on the stove for us. We picked up the apple mixture and during rest, and after library, each child had an opportunity see that neither the skin nor seeds ever became applesauce because they were sieved away during the final stirring process. The class certainly has more of an appreciation for how applesauce is made. With Thanksgiving around the corner, each child also drew and wrote about something that they were thankful for in their lives. The more the children learned about the Pilgrims, the more they thought we needed to build the Mayflower and set sail for America. It has been a treat to see the ship take shape and evolve. The day of the SK Feast all classes walked over to Mellowes Hall and enjoyed the songs, dances, and poems presented by each class,. The children then ate delicious of corn muffins and butter, pumpkin pudding, popcorn, and applesauce. The event concluded with a slide show of each child's I am thankful message. It was a great morning enjoyed by all. A by "thank you" to all of the parents who helped make this event so successful. The class also looked and cut out circles, triangles, squares and rectangles shapes, while looking through holiday magazines this week. Please note that this activity complements the shape study that the children are enjoying in French. Perhaps your child could tell you the French names for the shapes in our book. The children each created a feather for our festive Mr. Turkey who will greet our guests the morning of the 24th. The class has planned some very special activities and look forward to sharing their time with special grandparents and friends. Please return the slip in your Friday Folder informing us of your child's schedule for the morning of the 24th. See you soon! HELP YOUR CHILD PRACTICE HIS/HER TURKEY RIDDLE DAILY!
