A Classroom of Learners

Learning is fun and this class certainly seems to thrive on this little statement! We have been exploring individual and small reading groups. Please request your child to use a book mark while reading. After reading, encourage your child to sequence the book, talk about the setting of the book, the characters, his/her favorite part of the book, why it is the favorite part of the story, and perhaps, ask how the story may have ended differently. It is evident that many children are playing the word family games and are reviewing their sight words. Children, keep up the good work! Most of all, continue to read to your child often. The short vowel chart that was sent home in last week's in Friday Folder should be posted where your child reads and should be reviewed each time before reading. Your child knows how the chant goes. The class had a fantastic time creating their geometric marshmallow structures this week. PLEASE keep the materials for this activity at your fingertips throughout the summer. Visitors and family members will enjoy using their creativity making these intricate structures, and your child will love taking a leadership role in showing others how to do them. The egg hatching process continues. This week the class "candled" the thirteen eggs under a bright light to see if the chicks are developing. Ask your child about the outcome of our investigation. The children created an activity to help them remember our investigation and wrote an entry into the Chick Diary. They added illustrations and new vocabulary words into the Chick Term Books as well. We used our colorful baskets and eggs to create addition problems and will use them next week to create subtraction problems. Manipulatives are still important tools for children to use at this age, especially since we are using the strategy of "adding on." We are reviewing time on our analog clocks by the hour and half-hour with so much confidence that we are now exploring minutes in increments of fives. Hip, Hip, Hooray we love learning each day. We have an opportunity to help the second grade collect non-perishable items for the Hunger Task Force until the last week in May. Please give items to this project often. Moms, your child has been making several art pieces that will be on display during our SK Mother's Day Art Show in Mellowes Hall, Wednesday, May 5th from 6:00-7:00pm. Please join your Sker and share this special evening with us. Please remember to bring a donation for Hope for Haiti and perhaps you will go home with The Very Colorful Caterpillar collage, a collaborative Eric Carle piece. See you soon. Picture Album will not be posted until later in the week due to Internet delays. Hip, Hip, Hooray! Chick Plus More Picture Album has been posted!

  1. Dear Mrs. Camp and the SK class,
Busy little learning beavers you have been! Your chick project is so amazing and I love hearing about all that you are doing to care for these eggs and hopefully prepare for the arrival of some chicks.

Also, I am very excited about the Mother's Day Art Show. I can't wait until Wednesday evening to see your beautiful creations.

Hugs to all of you, Mrs. Jochmann
