Welcome to the New Year!

As you can see we had an exciting beginning to 2010. The children started each day by placing number cards 0-30 in order by either 1's, 2s, 5s, or 10s. Practicing these counting skills throughout the week have given the children confidence in counting in a variety of ways. Wait until you see how we use counting skills next week! Top It, a game which reinforces number recognition and number comparisons, has really been a "hit" with the class and will be placed in our math center soon. Penguins have taken center stage this week! The children discussed what they knew about penguins before visiting our LS science teacher, Mrs. Zingelbauer, in the science lab. The infomation gathered by the children was used as a springboard to our study. The above video clip will give you a glance into our discussion with her. The "blubber" experiment and the Rock-Hopper penguin masks were wonderful additions to our visit. Please keep your January calendar close at hand, we have an exciting month ahead. The predocodable book, Soup, led to a meaningful learning experience. Your child has written a detailed soup recipe and is excited about the possibility of having you making it sometime within the near future. The children also wrote about the SK Mitten Tree service project. There are only a few more alphabet letter formations to learn and then the class will introduced to lined paper. This is a huge next step in the year of an SKer but this class is ready for the challenge! Enjoy a cozy winter weekend! Wishing you and yours a healthy and happy 2010!

  1. Happy New Year dear SK, Happy New Year dear SK, Happy New Year dear SK, you blew me away!

I had so much fun reading all that you have done since you have been back at school. I cannot believe it has only been like 8 days and you have done so many wonderful things.

Lilian told me about your visit to Mrs. Z and your study of penguins and blubber, but what a treat it was to see it in video. Kudos to you Mrs. Camp for knowing how to connect all these wonderful pictures and videos so that we can all feel like we are there learning with you! I learned something new- you will never see a Polar Bear with a penguin in nature. I do not think I knew that to be a fact! How very interesting.

I loved your New Year celebration. You got to throw confetti in class! Leaping Lizards!! I can tell that this year is going to be a great year of learning. Enjoy all that your are learning and never ever think that you have learned enough! There are always new interesting things to learn about.

Penguin hugs to all of you! Mrs. Jochmann
