Week 8 Eric Carle/Fall

It had finally happened, all of our chrysalises had emerged over the weekend; even the one nestled so comfortably in the block area, and it was time to release them into Nature. But wait, before this special event could occur, we had places to go and people to see. The Kingwill family had enjoyed Graham's classroom pet, Harley the Gecko, over the weekend. Reily had four crickets left that he wanted to feed to the little creature, so we eagerly ventured to Mrs. Konic's fourth grade. We quietly watched as Reily proudly fed Harley, and then we were off! The butterflies knew it would be an arduous journey to Mexico, so as we sang Goodbye Butterfly for the last time, they lingered in the garden drinking nectar to gain strength. We had three special guests this week. Mrs. Jochmann read Iggy Peck Architect with such enthusiasm I knew she must have known Iggy. Mrs. Simanonok read Draw Me a Star, while counting to eight in German as she showed the children how to make an eight pointed star. Mrs. Laing, our butterfly expert, helped the children make clay caterpillars which we will soon glaze. The class wrote two cards this week for children who were celebrating their sixth birthday. They also wrote a journal entry about things they really really like! While on a fall walk the children carefully selected a beautiful tree that they will observe and research throughout the year. The class named it Autumn. Awesome! Bill Martin Jr., a famous children's author, asked Eric Carle to illustrate the book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Bill Martin encouraged Eric Carle to become a picture writer. The class wanted to try the collage techniques that are used throughout Eric Carle's books. The children partnered with a friend to create their own colorful paints and made individual collages which will be used in future class art projects. The SK classes ended the week by joining Jumpstart, along with millions of others around the world, hoping to make The Very Hungry Caterpillar the most read book on October 8, 2009; thus being entered into the Guinness Book of World Records! Results forthcoming! Please remember to collect leaves, put them inside newspaper, and then under a heavy book. Bring them to class Tuesday, and join us from 8:15-9:15 to create lovely leaf hangings! Enjoy your long weekend with friends and family! U R Terrific!

  1. Wow, you guys are always so busy. You picked a great day to let the butterflies go - it was all sunny outside. And what a pleasure to visit with Mrs. Camp and her students. I always like to read to a captive audience. The 8-pointed stars looked awesome. Thanks for inviting me, Mrs. Camp. Also, Max's Oma & Opa will be arriving on Monday, 10/19 - I am sure they would love to visit with you and the class as well.
