Meet Little Chick

Our week began by having a review to the candling process. Ask your child to tell you about it. The children then entered an entry into their Chick Diary. Each child made a model to depict the candling process and had an individual conference with me. We reviewed the "ig", "ip", and "it" word families and each child made and "ig" word family book. Please continue to review the vowel chart chant before reading and play the word family game that was sent home at our March conferences. The children wrote about both the SK Art Show and their Mother's Day weekend, on different days of course. The children are becoming more confident in their abilities to organize their thoughts and express their ideas in a personal manner. If fact, you can often hear their "writing voices" as they place words on the page. Tuesday, was the big day! During the afternoon we started hearing a very strong "peep" and by early evening our chick had arrived. We had hoped another would hatch but alas, it did not. We started calling the chick Little Chick because it was soooooo small. Thursday , we put our new class friend into a coup with water and food. It was a very lonely and peeped loudly for most of the school day. I suggested that the children come into the classroom Friday morning, get paper, pencil, a clipboard, and observe and write about the Little Chick. The response to this request was amazing. Each child sat quietly, observed our fluffy friend, and wrote about him/her. A teacher's dream came true! Hip, Hip, Hooray for our SK! These observation will be placed in their Chick Diaries soon. We continued to work with coins, clock/time, and the concepts of plus as minus throughout the week. We celebrated Jimmy's Special Day and enjoyed having his mom, his brother Billy ,who just returned from college Thursday evening , and Kat, Jimmy's sister, a former student of mine join us for in this special occasion. Kat had another class friend join us as well. Did you know Jimmy wants to be President of the United States when he grows up? I'd vote for him in a mimnute! Your child is ready to engage you in a great book discussion using decodable books Little Cat, Big Cat and But I Can. Please encourage this conversation to take place. Hope You read Skippyjon Jones with your child. Remember, Thursday we are off to Green Meodows from 8:30 - 2:30 to explore adventures at the farm! Chaperones, I'll send your note home Monday. You are invited to ride the bus with us so please be at school by 8:00. Wishing you a great weekend. I'll check in on Little Chick daliy. See you Monday!
