Winter is Coming and a New Year Too!

The children began the week by discussing and then writing about Grandparents and Special Friends Day. They also discussed their Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. With 2010 only a month away, the children made "count down chains" and each evening are hopefully reciting the poem and taking a link off of the chain. One of the SK teachers commented on how uniform and neat the chains appeared on our hallway bulletin board By the way, gluing a thirty-one six inch chains andcounting them takes a great deal of fine motor skill and concentration on the part of young children. You may wish to challenge your child to count the chain by twos and fives as well. Monster Mash is coming home today. Please play the game often with your child. It has several math building skills including number recognition, the concept of more and less, and number formation. The game may also be used to count by twos, fives, tens, and naming odd or even numbers. The class is reading Footprints in the Snow by Cynthia Benjamin. We are using the book to develop fluency, recognize action verbs like hop, run, race, and research the habitat, food and habits of various winter animals. Some children have taken books home over the weekend to explore while others may ask you to help them find information about an animal by using the Internet. We will see where this leads next week. The class continues to explore the formation of letters with enthusiasm and completed several lessons on syllabicationthis week. Exploring how many parts there are in a word is a strategy that is imperatiove to utilize when decoding new and longer words. In November the children had fun with riddles. This month they are exploring rhyming words in much the same way. At our class party, after The Preprimary Holiday Sing, Thursday, December 17th you'll probably see several rymes posted in our room for your enjoyment. It is my hope that you have heard a great deal about the SK Mitten Tree. The grade level has invited the lower school to join us in collecting mittens, scarves and hats for the Robert M. LaFollette School in Milwaukee. The Skers proudly marched on stage and sang Bring in Mittens to a resounding applause from an audience of over well over two hundred thirty children Thursday morning. We then went to JK to deliver large beautifully designed and painted cutout mittens and hats to advertise our service project. Later that afternoon our resident expert knitted shared her knitting talents with the children and read The Mitten Tree. Today, in the middle of The Lincoln Center you'll find an SK Mitten Tree that is quickly becoming filled with warm mittens, scarves and hats. Thanks for your contributions to this sharing and caring service project. The children are so excited because people are filling the tree. Never fear however, we have huge boxes on standby and plan to fill them to the brime in time for the Decemeber 17th deadline. Believe it or not we have no results to our estimations of the acorns and cranberries. but we promise to have the results for you next week. It time to send in snowpants and really warm mittens, boots, and hats. The wind on the playground is harsh when children are not dressed properly. Again, rest is important for the next two weeks. Please get your child tucked in early an enjoy a book together. The children continue to thrive as learners and keep me on my toes. Oh, by the way, do you know why it snowed today? Our class made Snow Wishing Wands Guess the work! Hip, Hip, for our SK adventures. Enjoy a cozy warm weekend!
