Inviting the class to put their math skills in play while making applesauce was an eye-opening experience for the children. Their estimations of how much the apples weighed ranged from three to eighty pounds, with the actual weight being twenty-four pounds. The class counted the apples in each of the twelve bags and discovered that two bags had eleven apples while the other six bags had twelve. This information eventually led the class to the conclusion that the total number of bagged apples was ninety-four. By using a tape measure the children also discovered that the
circumference of an apple was six inches. The children collaborated and cooperated while coring and chopping the apples. The class then "carted" the apples to the kitchen where Ms. Donna cooked them. Unfortunately we forgot to pick-up the finished product before the end of the day, so, the children will have an opportunity to sieve applesauce early next week. The SK Feast was great! Sixty-five turkeys waddled their way through the upper school and boarded the Mayflower. Many thanks to the parents who set-up, served, and cleared the deck after the event. Mrs. Pierson engaged the children in a retelling
of the first thanksgiving which was shortly followed a song, poem, or dance from each classroom. After saying Grace, the children enjoyed applesauce, corn bread with homemade butter, popcorn, juice and pumpkin pudding. Yum! The feast was followed by a slide show that depicted something special that each child was thankful for this Thanksgiving. What a wonderful way of end this occassion. Speaking of special, the llustrator, Renee Graef, presented the preprimary children inpiring program. She stated that as young as seven years old she knew she wanted to illustrate children's books. She encouraged the children to follow their talents and dreams throughout their lives, excellent advise for all of us. Throughout the week, our class eagerly played the game, Monster Sqeeze. The children can't wait to invite those who will be attending Grandparents and Special Friends Day to play with them. The game reinforces number recognition and the concepts of greater and less. It will be a delightful occassion for everyone. The lower school collected more than thirteen hundred items for the food drive. Hip, Hip, Hooray to USM for helping our greater community. Have a enjoyable weekend!
Dear Mrs. Camp and the Pilgrims (I mean the SK class!),
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite blog so far. Today Lilian and I are still in our pajamas at 11:06! It is our lazy day to read books and read your blog. I am thankful that Mrs. Camp made this blog so we could all see all the great work you did to prepare for SK Feast. It takes a lot of apples to make applesauce! I am glad you did not have to carry that heavy pot to the kitchen. Your turkey hats are so silly and colorful, I wish I had one too. I loved reading about the things each of you is thankful for. The poem "Let's Be Thankful" is fantastic. I even watched the video. What great performers you are!! Lastly, I want one of those SK shirts. How cool are they. I think you kids are the luckiest in the world to have Mrs. Camp to teach you so many fun things. Now Lilian wants to write something:
I loved all projects!!!!!!!! It was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xoxoxoxoxoxo Lilian
It was so much fun to see all of you at the SK Feast. Liza told me all about the preparations that you made to get ready. I loved seing your colorful turkey hats and hearing about what each of you are thankful for. This weekend we talked about making Apple Pie and Liza said we should sieve the apples. I was surprised and then she explained what it meant. SK sounds like so much fun!!!
